For years, one voice and one face moved together like a perfect match on screen. Then something shifted. Now, long after the music stopped, singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya is again speaking about his broken equation with actor Shah Rukh Khan.

In a recent podcast conversation, the singer opened up about what went wrong, why it stayed unresolved, and how a simple apology might have changed everything.

What caused the rift

Talking to Nidhi Vasandani, Abhijeet described the core of the fallout in very direct terms: ego and self-respect.

He explained that the distance between him and Shah Rukh Khan was not sudden. It slowly formed over time, shaped by how situations were handled and how people reacted to them. According to him, both sides stood firm in their own space, one guided by ego, the other by personal dignity.

To explain his perspective, he mentioned incidents involving other film personalities. He pointed out how Shah Rukh remained cordial with people even after public disagreements, referring to filmmaker Farah Khan’s husband and also actor Aamir Khan, with whom Shah Rukh had earlier differences. Despite those moments, relationships continued.

“Couldn’t even say sorry once”

The singer made it clear that one moment stayed with him more than anything else, the absence of an apology.

He said what affected him deeply was not just what happened, but what didn’t happen after. In his view, a small gesture, even a single word like “sorry,” could have softened the situation. Instead, there was silence.

Abhijeet expressed that the lack of acknowledgement from someone he worked closely with left a lasting impact. To him, it was not about status or success, but about basic human response.

A voice closely tied to one star

There was a time when Abhijeet’s voice became almost inseparable from Shah Rukh Khan’s screen image. Through the 1990s and early 2000s, his playback singing helped define the actor’s musical identity in several films.

He admitted that he had, at one point, stopped singing for other actors because he felt strongly connected to Shah Rukh’s on-screen presence. That association, he said, became emotional.

Songs from films like ‘Baadshah’ and ‘Main Hoon Na’ carried that familiar blend of voice and character.

However, Abhijeet also shared that even during those years, there were moments when he felt overlooked. He recalled being around but not always being acknowledged in the way he expected.

The breaking point after “Billu”

The professional association between the two reportedly came to an end after the film ‘Billu’. Over time, Abhijeet has maintained that the split was not sudden but rooted in deeper issues related to recognition and credit.

He specifically pointed to his experience during ‘Main Hoon Na’, where he felt his contribution was not properly acknowledged. For him, that moment affected his sense of self-respect.

He clarified that stepping away from Shah Rukh’s projects was not about arrogance or ego. Instead, it was a personal response to feeling undervalued.
